1.  Canada Post Review – Please Submit!

At the July 12th meeting of the SSW Executive, Policy and Education Committee Chair Coline Gardhouse moved the following motion in support of Canada Post:

Be it resolved that the SSW Exec strongly supports the postal workers in their present dispute and strongly support pay equity for all of their members and a decent pension for all.

The motion was passed unanimously.

We ask that you please visit the Government of Canada’s Canada Post Reviewwebsite to submit your comments in support of Canada Post.  There are many methods by which you can submit your comments – they can be found HERE.  Of course, it would be most appreciated if you would consider using our own postal system to submit your comments.  The mailing address is:

The SSW NDP EDA is also strongly in favour of exploring a system of postal banking for so many reasons.  Please check out the Canadian Union of Postal Workers website for more information on this worthwhile endeavour.

2.  Scarborough Town Hall on Climate Change – Tentative Date

Wednesday, August 17
6pm – 8pm
Scarborough Civic Centre (likely in the Rotunda).
Please mark this on your calendar, plan to attend if at all possible, and spread the word.

The Trudeau Government  is planning to issue a National Climate Strategy by the end of 2016. The SSW NDP has taken a stand in favour of the Leap Manifesto which includes the key principles  of the People’s Climate Plan. Toronto MPs have been hearing this message from participants at their Town Halls. We need our Scarborough MPs to hear it loud and clear as well.

3.  Lac-Mégantic and Line 9 Petitions

Our Policy and Education Committee also recommends that our members, supporters and friends strongly consider signing the below two petitions regarding very important matters:

Tell Canada’s Justice Ministry to stop scapegoating railroad workers for the 2013 Lac-Mégantic tragedy, and drop the charges against Tom Harding and Richard Labrie.
The Canadian Transportation Safety Board investigated the Lac-Mégantic disaster and found 18 factors at fault led by unsafe management policies. The Montreal, Main & Atlantic Railway are responsible for the direct causes of the disaster!

Line 9:

The tar sands are Canada’s largest single contribution to planetary climate change. Please sign this online petition to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to halt Enbridge’s tar sands pipeline, Line 9. Sign online by July 14; presentation to parliament will follow shortly after.

4.  Public Meeting re: Pickering Nuclear Station

Monday, July 25 @ 7PM
Scarborough Civic Centre (at McCowan and Ellesmere), Committee Room 1
TTC and GO station: Scarborough Town Centre
Free Car Parking at the Upper-Level Employee parking lot off Borough Dr.

The Pickering Nuclear Station is just 5 km east of Scarborough. Designed to last 30 years, it’s now 45, and OPG is seeking a licence to run it until it’s 57. One of the world’s oldest and largest nuclear stations, it is surrounded by 2.2 million people (within 30 kms).

It has a troubled safety record. It already has 14,000 tonnes of high-level nuclear waste on site. It’s time to close Pickering Nuclear Station when its licence expires in 2018. Learn more with the Ontario Clean Air Alliance at this free public meeting.

5.  People’s Climate Plan – Events in Toronto

In Summer 2016, Members of Parliament across the country will hold public climate consultations.  The People’s Climate Plan has handily mapped venues for these locations across Toronto to make it easy to participate.  Click HERE to check out the website for more information.
